My Thoughts on 3D

3D is running rampant through the cinemas these days. It has its supporters and it has its enemies. I don't mind it so much as long as it's done well, and I mean really well. Any slight drop in quality releases what I call the "Fozzie Effect."
In Disney's California Adventure park in California and Disney's Hollywood Studios park in Florida is an show called Muppet-Vision 3D. Clearly it's centered around those lovable Muppets and carries with it their charm and sense of humor. At one point in the show, Kermit the Frog explains to the audience that "...at no time will we be stooping to any cheap 3D tricks." It's then that Fozzie pops in and says "Did somebody say 'cheap 3D tricks?!'" and proceeds to blow a party blower into the audience. Therein lies my problem with 3D.

Every time I'm watching a 3D movie and something needlessly and/or blatantly pops out of the screen at me to the point of being distracting, all I hear is Fozzie's voice proclaiming "Cheap 3D tricks!" This is the case more often than not. From my experience, there are only a handful of movies I've seen where the 3D actually added to the movie experience rather than detract from it. So given the option, for the most part I will opt out to see the 2D version of a movie. My exception is big name re-releases like Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and the Star Wars films coming out once a year for the next six years. But even then, I go to see them because they're on the big screen again, not because they're in 3D.
