The Oscars
Almost a week ago, Hollywood celebrated the 84th Academy Awards. The next day I went to work and asked around "Hey! Did you see the Oscars?" "How about them Oscars?" "So, those moving picture awards-" and I realized no one had watched them. Someone finally asked me "Why do you watch those?" I told him I'd get back to him with that while I thought long and hard about it. I have yet to get back to him.
Instead, I'll put my answer here, served up hot and fresh just for you. And my answer is this: Football fans have their Super Bowl, and movie buffs have our Oscars, and the two are very similar.
This year I had only seen one movie nominated for Best Picture, and it was Hugo. Now, I liked Hugo, but it was one of those movies where I'm glad I saw it, but wouldn't die troubled if I never saw it again. But just like football, not everyone's favorite team is going to get to the Super Bowl every year. Yet everyone still watches the game. Not everyone cared about the Giants or the Patriots this year. But they still watched. I didn't see The Artist, Midnight in Paris, or Warhorse, but I still watched. The Super Bowl had the lousy calls and plays where you just wanted to throw lamps at the TV. At the Academy Awards, The Iron Lady won Best Makeup for making an old lady look like an old lady, and I wanted to throw my lamp at the TV.
So why do I watch the Academy Awards? Because I'm a fan of movies, and even if I don't follow the teams playing this year, and even if I don't agree with the calls being made, I'm going to sit in front of my TV on that glorious Sunday and root for the achievements of cinema.
Here's to looking forward to the 85th Academy Awards.
